John Taylor Wood was the grandson of Zachary Taylor and the nephew of Jefferson Davis. Though his parents remained loyal to the Union, he resigned from the US Naval Academy and took lieutenants commission in the Confederate navy and raided shipping on the North Atlantic coast.
