Smith, Elder. 1874 First book edition. with alterations and additions following initial publication in the medical journals "Lancet" and "British Medical Journal". Duodecimo, green cloth with gilt titling to top board and spine. xvi, 182pp. Light shelf-wear with a small hole in the cloth on the spine. Bookplate to pastedown. Residual white classification numbers to foot of spine, but no other indication of institutional ownership. A nice, tight copy. Born of Scottish parents in Jamaica, Murchison (1830-1879) served for a time in the Bengal Army and published a work on the climate and diseases of Burma (now Myanmar). He settled in London in 1856 and quickly established himself as "one of the greatest clinical teachers London has ever known". - GM 2220 (citing Treatise on Continued Fevers, 1862). In 1868 he published Clinical Lectures on Diseases of the Liver. Price:
