1 Burton, Robert. (Democritus, junior). The Anatomy of Melancholy. What It Is, With All the Kindes.
Oxford. Lichfield and Short. 1624 Half-Leather
Second edition, corrected and augmented by the author. Quarto (11.25in x 7.5in) brown leather spine and corners with brick-red cloth-backed boards. Gilt titling and five raised bands to spine. Blind-stamped decorative device to top board. [vi], 557pp, [viipp index]. Marbled edges. Endpapers have been renewed. Relatively recent bookplate to front pastedown. Handwritten note of 10 lines in an old hand to the verso of the second blank describes the publication of the various editions up to 1638, and the place and date of Burton's birth and death. Occasional foxing throughout. Leather is lightly rubbed to corner tips and to folds with spine. Marginal pencil line to p378 and initial in pen to p405. Professional repair to a small hole on the final leaf. Overall a remarkably well preserved copy in a Victorian or Edwardian binding that is tight. In 1621 Robert Burton published the first edition. In 1624 he published the somewhat revised and enlarged second edition. This book was the first book to describe depression and the first to attempt an analysis of psychiatry and its principles, though it also is a curious and colorful mixture of psychological speculation and allusive learning. It has become a deeply respected tome and is seen as a cornerstone book in the development of scientific thought. The full title reads: The Anatomy of Melancholy: What it is. With All Kinds, Cases, Symptoms, Prognostics, and Several Cures of It. In Three Main Partitions, with Their Several Sections, Members and Subsections. Philosophically, Medicinally, Historically Opened and Cut Up by Democritus, junior. With a Satirical Preface, Conducing to the Following Discourse.
