Royal octavo, black leather that is blindstamped to both boards with titling to spine. xvi, 832pp. Marbled edges and endpapers. Loosely inserted is the original publishers flyer for this book. Leather is split to heel of spine on upper fold and to head of spine on lower fold. The titling and gilt embellishments to the spine have faded and the black color of the leather has lost its crispness with the tan calf showing through on raised elements of the stamped board. Preliminary pages, including the title page, are foxed with occasional spots throughout. The 34 chapters include the following subject headings: History of Slavery in the North American Colonies; Political History of Slavery in the United States (7 chapters); Slavery Under the Confederation; Formation of the Constitution - Slavery Compromises; Repeal of the Missouri Compromise; History of the Troubles in Kansas; Statistical Tables constructed from the Census of 1850.
